I have a VERY OLD, (ca. mid-19th century) Asian Cradle with beautiful detailed hand carvings.
It measures 44” x 30”w x 25”h. approximately.
It can rock but also was designed to hang so it can swing from perhaps a tree limb- (it has holes for ropes to pass through)- Also it has place for mother to sit inside with the baby and rock when it is on the floor. There is also the space for storage of linens under the baby’s sleep platform. I don’t know the wood- (probably teak-or elm- it is hard) but it has little carved Fu dogs on the top of each corner. (But, they really look like rabbits, with floppy ears).
I don’t think there is a nail in this piece. We haven’t been able to find one- it is all joined by mortise and tenon. Sorry these shots were taken a year ago when it was a little dusty.
The cradle is lovely and it’s carved with auspicious omens - the “Fu”, Goddess Guan Yin (I believe) riding the mythical Qilin and carved characters for long life. I purchased this piece at an N.Y. Antique Auction House. I just don’t have Asian house decor anymore since I have moved from NY to Beaufort, SC.
I love this cradle but must let it go to someone who will appreciate it. I have owned it for over 30 years. My intent was to make it a unique cocktail table, to have glass custom cut to fit on top - under which I would have displayed artifacts. Never did that- just stored it in a back bedroom all these years. I know the Asians are buying back their art and antique furniture......so maybe timing is right to let it go. I have an email appraisal value (from I-Gavel) of between $900 to $1000.
Please... serious inquiries only. Price is cash only. Located in Beaufort.
